Is gender the most important thing to be talking about in literary studies and criticism today? Is it the only thing? Sometimes it feels like it. Writing in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Toby Lichtig adds his two cents in an essay on “Genderalizations.” That he has to begin by saying that “this is an article that has been written, in one form or another, many times over recent years,” says a lot. Still, more and more the argument seems to be over statistics, and one thing Lichtig’s essay does is to look a little closer at what these mean.
